Clément Dulac – Intern 2022

Clément Dulac is a Master’s student in Development Studies at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. He will be an intern at IFRA from June to end of August 2022, between his first and his second year of Master. He specialized in the study of East Africa during his Bachelor’s degree at INALCO and the Humboldt University of Berlin where he learned Swahili and studied the region through the humanities and social sciences. At the Institute for Development Studies, he has confronted his knowledge with contemporary development issues while also reflecting on the very notion of development and its practice today.

During his internship, he is contributing to the organization of events, such as the Citizens’ Forums Series, and conducting a daily press review on the Kenyan elections, with Voting Day taking place on August 9. He is also part of a research program on these elections, documenting the new figures of MCAs in Kenyan political life. Bringing together several Kenya-based researchers, the project aims at creating a series of individual candidate biographies from data collected in the field, in order to shed light on why and how they enter politics. For this purpose, Clément carried out his first fieldwork in Olkaria, a ward of Nakuru bordering Lake Naivasha, where he spent time with and interviewed an MCA aspirant as well as met residents of the ward to capture a variety of views about this candidacy
