Charles Clément – Intern 2019

Charles Clément is a Master’s student in history from Paris 1-University Panthéon-Sorbonne (France). He will be IFRA’s intern from September to December 2019. His work deals with the encounter between African populations and the Portuguese on the Mozambican coast, and the establishment of the latter in south-eastern Africa from the 16th century onwards, specifically in the coastal cities of Ilha de Moçambique, Angoche and Quelimane.

In his first Master’s thesis (September 2018- July 2019), Charles analysed the impact of Portuguese’s arrival in the Mozambican Channel as a starting point for new trade networks and cultural representations between African inhabitants – especially the Swahili people – and the Portuguese. After studying the Portuguese documents (letters, reports, and scholarly works), he showed the impact of the European presence that defined new and different roles for these coastal cities in the Swahili trade network, which led to new representations of their inhabitants by the Portuguese. For his second master’s thesis, Charles will investigate the fate of Ilha de Moçambique, Angoche and Quelimane in the 17th and 18th centuries, at a time when the Portuguese Empire is weakened everywhere, except in Mozambique.
