Methodology Training

Studying human populations: methodological approaches
Intensive training, 10-13 Dec 2024
Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya

Population studies often involve mixed methods, with qualitative and quantitative approaches. This
training session aims at providing a good understanding of each approach and of their combination in research projects. On the basis of recent research programmes, we will discuss research practice from conceptualisation to data collection and analysis. What are the practical ways of combining qualitative and quantitative approaches in individual projects? Can qualitative research stand on its own? How can field notes be taken into account in data analysis? Can a spatial approach be quantitative? Can secondary data be sufficient for a project? How can mapping be used in population research? These are part of the questions that we aim at answering. Practicals with R (statistical analysis) and Nvivo (qualitative data analysis) will be provided. Participants will have to choose among parallel sessions.

Organizers: Prof. Eunice Kamara, Dr. Eric Masese, Assoc. Prof. Ann Mwangi (Moi University, Kenya); Dr. Valérie Golaz, Dr. Arlette Simo Fotso (INED, France), Dr. Stephen Ojiambo Wandera (Makerere University) and Dr. Claire Medard (IRD, France).

Requirements: This 4-day training session targets academic staff and postgraduate students involved in research projects or in designing mixed methods research projects. No prior knowledge of any of the software is required. It is preferable to have data to analyse to optimise the workshop skills.

How to apply? Before 10th November 2024, please send to moi.poptraining2024@gmail.com in a single message (with attachments):

  1. A one page CV / Resume
  2. A one-page motivation letter, including:
    a. What you expect from the training
    b. Whether you already have experience using R. If so, can you describe in what context,
what types of analyses, what for?
    c. Whether you already have experience collecting and analysing qualitative data. If so,
can you describe in what context, what type of data, and what for?
    d. Whether you are primarily interested in qualitative or quantitative parallel sessions
  3. A one-page summary / poster (A4) presenting your ongoing /planned research:
    a. Topic, names
    b. The research question & its justification
    c. Methodological approach, and data sources
Posters of selected participants will be shared during the workshop.

Funding: This training is supported by Moi University, Kenya, Makerere University, Uganda, and three French institutes: IPOPS, INED and IRD. The organisers are grateful to IFRA-Nairobi and to the research project ”The Remaking of the Family inEast Africa” (FamilEA), financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (Sinergia programme, grant no.
